The United States, which has made a priority of trying to improve relations with Myanmar,
said on Friday that it was “very concerned” by reports that four
journalists and their newspaper’s chief executive had been sentenced to
10 years of hard labor. The sentences sent “the wrong message about
Burma’s commitment to freedom of expression, including for the press,”
said a State Department spokesman, who was not identified. The four
journalists and the chief executive of the Unity newspaper were
sentenced on July 10 for reporting that a factory under the control of
the Ministry of Defense was producing chemical weapons.
